Chapter 18

Atlas

Amiah’s screams followed me until she passed out and I commanded the roots to retreat. I was already almost out of the forest, pulling the journal from my pocket and gripping it tightly in my hands. I had always kept meticulous notes regarding potions and substances that I had worked with. There were a lot of entries in this journal from after the accident. I had recalled seeing Argonik on the shelf while working with my mother, but we’d never used it. I had never thought to question its existence.

I kept notes regarding the effect that it had with the figam potion, as well as how it interacted in Amiah’s system. Thus far, the only meaningful thing that I had noted was also the most obvious thing. It stole her magical abilities.

Writing it all down was a particularly incriminating course of action, so much so that I considered burning the book a few times before, but the information in it could still prove valuable for future alchemical efforts. And it wasn’t the only useful thing that I kept in this journal.

Immediately upon arriving at the palace, I went to my room. I set the journal down and sat at my desk flipping through the pages, feeling the panic rising in my chest as I read through my notes from 5 years ago. I ran my fingers through my hair as my head fell into my hands. My knee bounced, “one, two, three, four…” I muttered to myself, trying to stop the rise of emotions before they spiraled out of control, “come on, Atlas, come on…” I started counting again before I was startled by a knock on my door.

My mother walked in without waiting for me to answer. Sometimes I could understand Amiah’s frustration with her. “What’s the matter?” she asked, coming closer and rubbing my back.

“I’m fine…” I breathed, aggressively tapping my knuckles against the desk.

I felt her stiffen and followed her gaze to the journal on my desk. “Why is that here?”

“She found it.” I answered.

“What do you mean, she found it?!”

“Would you quiet down? Kiernan is still around here somewhere.” I said quickly, “I went to the ruins. Amiah was there. She had just found it. I’m certain she didn’t read it.”

“So she just handed it over to you, no questions asked?” she asked. Her tone was quieter but still angry.

“She did ask questions, but I didn’t tell her anything.” I explained quickly. I stood from my seat and faced my mother.

“You didn’t tell her anything?”

I shook my head. “Why would I do that?”

She raised her eyebrow and crossed her arms. “Maybe you couldn’t help yourself? Maybe you told her the truth without even saying a word. She’s your twin sister, Atlas.”

“She can’t read my mind, mother.”

“No. But she can read your body language, your face, your actions.” she said, “So tell me again that she doesn’t know anything and hope that I believe you.”

I took a deep breath, knowing my options were limited. “She thinks the explosion was not an accident.
